Her hikayenin bir öncesi vardır. İşte, “Legend of the Galactic Heroes Gaiden” serisi bizi hikayemizin en başına götürüyor ve bize kahramanların kaderlerine yön veren olaylar dizisinin en başını görme imkanı sunuyor. LoGH Gaiden'da (Side Story), 28 bölümden oluşan Spiral Labyrinth ana seri olmak üzere; Golden Wings (OAV) ve iki filmden izler taşıyor.
110 bölümlük ana seride geçmişine çok az değinilen Yang Wen-li'nin hayatından sunulan kesitlerde; O'nun savaş tarihi eğitimi görmek istemesi, bunu barındıran okulun askeri oluşu, babasının ölümünden sonra biraz da zorunlu olarak askeri akademiye yazılması, savaş stratejileri konusundaki dehasının keşfedilmesi, El Fecil olayında yaşananlar ve sonrasında kendisinin bile engel olmadığı ve asıl idealini kaybetmesine neden olan yükselişi ve ana serinin pek çok karakteri ile yolunu kesiştiren olaylar dizisine tanık oluyoruz.
